On a good day, the climb to the Gertrude saddle is quite popular, but the second part of the route is
largely unmarked and crosses rock slabs above drops.
For competent trampers
only (see MS p.36 for more information).
From the Gertrude
Valley carpark (about 2k before the Homer tunnel), follow orange markers up the valley, and then up slopes on the true-right of the stream from Black Lake. Cross this stream, and climb a track
on scree to reach the slabs. Follow an obvious route across the slabs to near the top of the
stream from Black Lake, where a fixed wire eases the climb to Black Lake. Climb easy slabs to
the north of the lake outlet. When these steepen, follow the fixed wire to its end, and then sidle on slabs to reach a gulley leading to the Gertrude Saddle.
There are tarns and campsites near the saddle.

A marked track leads up the Tutoko Valley to Leader Creek (4 hours one way). The first section, through the bush,
is well-maintained. The track is boggy in places, but the views as you approach Leader Creek are spectacular.
The track starts just west of the bridge over the Tutoko River (about 3k from Milford; park either side
of the bridge).
