Notes

a. Park at Fantail Falls car park about 20 km north of the Haast pass. Follow signs to the Brewster Hut. Ford the Haast river (normally very easy, but can be impossible after heavy rain), and follow the track to the hut, which was new in 2007.
b. Climb ridge on tussock and scree, following cairns, to the top of Mt Armstrong. Snow possible early in the season.
There are good campsites near the hut. Above on the ridge there are only occasional tarns and occasional (almost) flat spots.
Alternatives: To the hut and back is an easy day hike (but the higher you go the better the view). There is an easy cairned route to the Brewster glacier. It is possible to make a loop by crossing to Brewster Hut from the upper Makarora (MN p.176; 13h road to road).
